Should I remove cruciferous vegetables and soy from my diet? Nope! Keep eating them.
“Goitrogenic foods” (that’s a mouthful!) are foods that contain natural compounds which can slightly affect thyroid function by interfering with iodine uptake or thyroid hormone production. These include cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, kale, and also soy and flax.
The key point: for most people, these foods are not a problem. The potential effects mainly concern individuals who already have low or borderline iodine intake. So rather than cutting these healthy foods out, the goal is to ensure you’re getting enough iodine in your diet.
Cooking these foods also greatly reduces their goitrogenic effect—so while you don’t need to avoid raw versions, it’s best to enjoy them cooked most of the time.
In short: cruciferous veggies, soy, and flax are nutrient powerhouses—keep them on your plate!
Should I go gluten-free if I have Hashimoto’s? Not necessarily—but a short trial can be reasonable.
Current evidence does not support a gluten-free diet (GFD) for everyone with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis who does not have celiac disease. Most studies show no significant improvement in thyroid antibody levels or thyroid hormone function with a gluten-free diet in non-celiac Hashimoto’s patients.
Some research has found modest reductions in thyroid antibody titers or TSH in certain individuals after adopting a gluten-free diet—but these results are inconsistent and may be due to other factors, such as general improvements in diet quality or reductions in inflammation, rather than gluten itself.
Overall, anti-inflammatory eating patterns—a diet rich in whole plant foods, which emphasize vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and omega-3-rich foods—show stronger evidence for reducing inflammation and supporting thyroid health than a gluten-free diet alone.That said, going gluten-free for a few months won’t harm most people and may help you determine if you personally notice improvements in your energy, digestion, or thyroid antibody levels. It’s a safe experiment for some, but not a universal recommendation.
Bottom line: Unless you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, you don’t need to avoid gluten—but trying a short-term gluten-free diet can be a reasonable way to see how your own body responds.
