What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live, helpful bacteria and yeasts that you consume through certain foods and drinks. Think of them as reinforcements for your digestive system, our body is home to trillions of these microorganisms together called microbiota. They work to maintain or restore a healthy, natural balance in your gut or other organs. By supporting this balance, they help keep your digestion running smoothly and contribute to your overall well-being.

Why Are Probiotics Important?

Probiotics keep your gut in a state called eubiosis (balance). When the balance is off. due to stress, antibiotics, poor diet, or illness, harmful bacteria can take over. That state is called dysbiosis, and it’s linked to many health problems.

Probiotics help in seven key ways

  • Fight bad bacteria: They compete with and block harmful bacteria like E. coli, H. pylori, and Clostridium perfringens by producing natural antimicrobial substances.
  • Boost your immune system: They stimulate your body’s innate immune response and reduce chronic inflammation. About 70% of your immune system lives in your gut.

  • Lower cholesterol and blood pressure: Some strains help reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and may improve blood pressure regulation.
  • Support mental health:  Through the gut-brain axis, probiotics may help reduce anxiety, depression, and even brain fog. These special strains are sometimes called psychobiotics.

Probiotics and Antibiotics

Antibiotics cannot tell the difference between bad bacteria and good ones. They wipe out large portions of your gut microbiota. This is why many people get diarrhea, yeast infections, or feel generally unwell after a course of antibiotics.

The protocol:

  • Take probiotics at least 2–3 hours apart from your antibiotic dose (otherwise the antibiotic may kill the probiotics too)
  • Continue probiotics for 2–4 weeks after finishing antibiotics to help your gut fully recover
  • Best strains for antibiotic recovery: Saccharomyces boulardii, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, and Bifidobacterium strains

Probiotics for Infants and Pregnancy

Probiotics are particularly important during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and infancy.

  • Taking probiotics during pregnancy may reduce the risk of eczema in the child
  • Infant probiotics (specific strains) can help with colic, reflux, and diarrhea
  • Babies born by C-section miss exposure to beneficial vaginal bacteria; probiotic supplementation may help restore their gut development
